Newport News Shipbuilding says it’s discovered that faulty welds may have knowingly been made to submarines and aircraft carriers under construction at the shipyard. Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin made the announcement on Friday afternoon,

Shipuilder Newport News Shipbuilding, Va., informed the Department of Justice of faulty welds that may have been made intentionally on non-critical components on in-service Navy submarines and aircraft carriers,

"Some of the welds in question were made by welders who knowingly violated weld procedures," Boykin wrote. NNS contacted the Department of Justice and regulators about the issue, and engineers were able to put in place immediate short-term solutions while figuring out the next moves for long-term solutions.

Reports that welds on Navy submarines and aircraft carriers being built at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia may have been purposely faulty have prompted a congressional investigation.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressed concern over the safety of sailors and ships due to potentially intentional faulty welding in a shipyard.
